No substrate colour is black. That is what keeps the field readable: if a
zero-valued cell were black, an assertion of zero and the absence of substrate would be
indistinguishable, and no amount of determinism could recover the difference.

Hurricane tracks are settled against the landfall that actually happened, as
exact integer bonds. Nothing here is interpolated and nothing is a forecast dressed as a fact.
Why there is no smoothing
Upscaling is integer nearest-neighbour — no smoothing. Interpolating between two
substrate cells would invent a value the substrate never asserted, and the invention would look
exactly as authoritative as the measurements.
